The San Jose State Senior Forecasting Team has won the National Collegiate Weather Forecasting Contest! After years of nearly winning, SJSU dominated longtime nemesis MIT and the nearly 40 other schools that participated during the 2005-06 season. And, SJSU forecaster, Massoud Fazal, aka "wxstrm", has won the overall individual title of National Forecasting Champion out of 1066 contestants, also a great accomplishment. Congratulations Massoud!!
Not only did the Spartan's win the team title and overall individual title, they won the coveted "Top 5 Forecasters" award given to the team with the top five forecasters in the country. This is an incredible feat considering the SJSU fab 5 were up against teams with as many as 40 forecasters. So, our 5 total beat their top five...a remarkable achievement. And, SJSU Forecasters all finished in the top 10 out of approximately 300 eligible forecasters in the Junior/Senior division, including taking 3 out of the top 4 spots.
Mike Voss, two time overall winner, SJSU Meteorology forecasting instructor, and team manager said this about the results: "Our program has been working toward this goal for 8 years. What this team has achieved is really amazing. To my knowledge, this is the single best season of forecasting ever completed by any team in the 20 year history of the NCWFC. No team has ever swept the team title, the top individual title, and the "Top 5 Forecasters" title in the same year. I could not be more proud of this group of graduating seniors. We are certainly proud of our tradition of forecasting excellence, and this year really solidified our national reputation."
