The objective of Turbulence …is to
give pilots the knowledge to recognize conditions favorable for
turbulence so that its detrimental effects on flight can be avoided
or minimized. Turbulence … may be considered an expansion
of the turbulence information discussed in Chapter 12 of Aviation
Weather. In that sense, Turbulence …is more appropriate
for experienced pilots who have the “basics” and some
experience in dealing with turbulence. For interested students
and inexperienced pilots who want to read the text, I recommend
that you first read Chapter 12 in Aviation Weather.
The
turbulence text is nearly 15 years old. Although the basic
descriptions and explanations of turbulence phenomena and aviation
hazards in chapters 1-5 are still accurate, weather observation
procedures and techniques, weather map graphics, weather text
message formats, weather communications technology, and descriptions
of some methods of turbulence measurement are woefully out
of date.
The
need for an updated 2nd Edition has been discussed several
times over the past ten years with the publisher (Jeppesen).
However, budget considerations have continued to get in the way
of the needed changes. I have discouraged further reprinting
of the 1993 publication for the reasons listed above. To my best
knowledge, at this time (June 2007), Jeppesen still has no plans
for a new edition. If those plans change, I will post a message
here. In the meantime, if you have any comments with regard this
situation, please let me know. lester@met.sjsu.edu
